A new wave of pearl fashion

A diamond may be a girl’s best friend, but a pearl is a woman’s most commonly used jewelry. Believe it or not pearls are used to make paint, make-up, home decorations, medicine, and in Karl Lagerfeld’s case…a remarkable runway!   His message was that pearls have no barrier when it comes to fashion. We normally see the classic jewelry used in rings, necklaces and earrings, but the Chanel Spring/Summer 2012 collection showcased a new wave of pearl fashion.

Lagerfeld used this quietly iridescent treasure and other ocean inspirations in his collection, proving that beauty is truly sea deep. The models were drenched in pearls coupling them with belts, earrings and face piercings, as well as utilizing them as beauty marks and as buttons lining up their spine.

For those of you who believe pearls are old-fashioned, you should keep in mind all the legendary women who wore this very ladylike jewelry.  Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Coco Chanel, and not to mention, Marilyn Monroe, all realized the powerful understated influence pearls could make on their fashion statement.  Obviously, their intuition was correct since we are well aware of their impact on fashion and Hollywood forever.  Fashion trends are rarely a “shore” thing and perhaps they are in and out just as fast as the ocean tides and by the time you make your purchase that ship has sailed.

However, I hope that all you fashionistas have strong gills because this trend will quickly be flooding your local stores.  Fortunately for now, there are other fish in the sea in addition to Lagerfeld’s Marine Inspired Collection.  For instance, Topshop, Zara, House of Fraser, Coast, Mary Frances, Urban Outfitters and Stylebop who are all retailers that are showing pearl fashion pieces heavily within their collections.

Not interested in surfing the web for the perfect pearl ensemble?  Even if you’re no designer (like me) these suggestions are easy enough to get your feet wet…who knows you may discover a new talent!

Karl Lagerfeld once said, “The best thing to do is dive with your imagination, you can never drown yourself.”

Replace the plain buttons on your jacket with big pearls.

Glamorize your simple fabric headband or hair clip by gluing on different size pearls.

Glue pearls on the heel of last season’s black velvet pumps.

Sew the precious gem on the collar of your knit sweater, or the bottom of the sleeves.

Make a simple skinny belt look chic by adding a few pearls.

Add sophistication to your outfit when you rim the trimmings of your edgy clutch with pearls.

Glue a few small pearls on the arms of your sunglasses.
